Jayna

* * *

Two weeks after returning to my normal life—well, life as normal as Jayna King’s life could be—I arrived at Cameli, a Michelin-starred restaurant hidden inside one of Luke’s hotels on South Beach.

I was overdue for a lunch with Luke, and after going back and forth with our busy work schedules, we’d finally set today as the day to meet.

I felt I had to explain in more detail why I’d stood him up for our date. He’d accepted the text I’d sent saying I’d had an emergency meeting with a business partner, but I still felt terrible about how it had all turned out.

Blowing someone off wasn’t my style.

Strike that, with the exception of Ashok Shah.

I’d made blowing him off an art form. Even before Kir had disappeared from my life, no one could convince me to do something I was adamantly against without a solid reason.

I sighed as I approached the hostess. I only hoped by the end of this lunch, Luke and I were friends.

He was a nice guy—overbearing at times, but a nice guy.

“May I help you?” the hostess with long blond hair, bright green eyes, and a warm smile asked.

“Yes, I believe Mr. Joshi is waiting for me.”

She gestured to her right. “Come this way. He told me to bring you back.”

As I followed her, I felt a slight prickle of awareness down my spine.

Kir.

He wasn’t supposed to be here.

I scanned the diners, not seeing anyone familiar.

Releasing a deep breath, I focused ahead of me. It was just my mind playing tricks.

I’d gone almost three years without the man, and now two weeks without him seemed unbearable. Even when he was back in the city, we wouldn’t have the same relationship.

He’d come back as Antoni Silva, not Kir.

Through the briefings Danika sent me, I learned Antoni had made appearances in Vegas, LA, and New York. He’d bought large chunks of real estate from port space to luxury development spaces.

There had to be a reason he was buying all of those properties. I’d have to ask Sam—he’d know.

Well, that would require communication with him, and for now, the only King I’d spoken to was Danika. I was still too hurt.

Then again, if I stayed out of the King/Silva business, Kir wouldn’t need to poke his nose into mine.

After Lilly had relayed my plan to Danika and I’d had my expected ass-chewing, Danika had jumped in headfirst, ready to make sure there was an extra layer of protection between what I was implementing and Papa.

I wouldn’t lie to myself and say it wasn’t a relief to have the resources of a Dark Web hacker at my back. Now Mummy’s money was safe from Papa, and the very companies Papa illegally put in my name and tried to pass to Arun Joshi through a forced marriage were part of a trust based out of Switzerland.

As I turned a corner and saw Luke sitting against the back corner of the restaurant, I pushed down all thoughts of Papa.

Luke rose as I came into view, a big grin on his face.
